Ingredients Notes
These best garlic mashed potatoes need only a few everyday ingredients you already own:
- Potatoes – The best potatoes for these are the creamy Yukon gold. Avoid the waxier type of potatoes like red potatoes if you can. Peel the potatoes for a smooth mash.
- Roasted garlic – I make life easier by starting with some store-bought roasted garlic paste. However if you prefer you can start by roasting your own garlic.
- Butter – Use your favorite creamy butter. If making this vegan then use non dairy butter or olive oil.
- Heavy Cream – a must to make these potatoes so much creamier.
- Seasoning – Cook potatoes in salted water for the best result. Then just add in a some extra salt and freshly ground black pepper for aaaaaaall the flavor.
- Toppings – Add to your taste with things like extra butter, fresh herbs, grated Parmesan, etc.

- If roasting your own garlic, start by preheating the oven to 350F / 180C. Slice the top off the garlic bulb, drizzle on a bit of olive oil, wrap in foil, and roast for about 50 minutes, until golden and tender. Remove from oven and set aside.
- Place peeled potato cubes into salted water, bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for about 15 minutes, until tender. Drain properly before transferring into a bowl for mashing.
- Add butter to the potatoes, squeeze the roasted garlic out of the bulb and into potatoes, then mash.
- Add cream and continue mashing until you reach your desired consistency.
- Ideally best served warm.
Pro Cooking Tips
- Potatoes should be drained well before you mash, as any extra liquid will dilute their flavor and make them soggy.
- Make sure potatoes are cooked enough so that they mash up smooth. If undercooked they will be lumpy.
- Cut the potatoes into cubes that are the same size so they cook up evenly.
Delicious Variations
- Vary the dairy – Sour cream or cream cheese would work well also.
- Add some heat – With a pinch of red pepper flakes, cayenne or a dash of hot sauce.
- Swap the potatoes – Make this recipe using sweet potatoes or yams.
Storage and Meal Prep
- Refrigerate – store cooled potatoes in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
- Don’t Freeze – Potatoes don’t freeze well, so I don’t recommend freezing this.
- Meal Prep – make an extra batch that you can use with other meals throughout the week.
- Storage – This stores for 4 days, so you eat it on the day you cook it plus 4 more days. Keep in an airtight container inside the fridge.
