Fried wontons are the first thing I order when getting Chinese take-out, and these air fryer buffalo chicken wontons are a fun twist on one of my restaurant-quality favorites.

Air fryer wontons filled with cream cheese, blue cheese and spicy buffalo shredded chicken are also incredibly easy to make at home. The spicy flavor of the cream cheese filling and crispy fried wonton wrappers are incredibly addicting. Trust me; you’re going to want to make a bunch because you can’t eat just one.

Buffalo chicken wontons in air fryer are delicious pockets of your favorite spicy chicken appetizer. The cream cheese filling is easy to make and is a great way to use leftover rotisserie chicken.

The air fryer buffalo chicken wontons are easy to assemble, and you can cook wontons in air fryer in just a few minutes, so they are perfect for feeding a crowd. This fun game-day appetizer will be a hit at your next party.

Why Make This Recipe

  • Great For Leftover Chicken – The spicy chicken and cream cheese filling is made with shredded chicken. Make this frugal air fryer wonton recipe with leftover chicken breast or rotisserie chicken.
  • Easy Advanced Prep – You can cook frozen wontons in air fryer, and this buffalo chicken wonton recipe can easily be made in advance and frozen until you are ready to cook and serve these crispy cream cheese wontons.
  • Addictingly Delicious – This incredible wonton filling is not your typical Chinese restaurant style wonton. Cream cheese and blue cheese are mixed with buffalo chicken and green onions for a flavorful air fryer wonton that’s addictingly delicious.

How To Deep Fry Buffalo Chicken Wontons

  1. Heat two inches of cooking oil to 350 degrees F / 180 degrees C in a pan with deep sides over medium high heat.
  2. When the oil has come to temperature, add the wontons and fry for 2-3 minutes until lightly golden brown.
  3. Place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain off the excess oil.

How To Bake Wontons

To Fold Wontons

The key to folding wontons is to use small amounts of filling and not to over moisten. Just follow these easy steps;

  1. Lay a wonton wrapper on your work surface and add a small scoop of the cream cheese and buffalo chicken filling.
  2. Dip your finger into water and moisten the edge of the wonton wrapper.
  3. Fold the wonton wrapper in half to form a triangle, and gently press to seal the wontons.
  4. Set aside and repeat until you have used all of the chicken and cream cheese wonton filling.

Tips For Success

  • Bring the cream cheese to room temperature before making the filling.
  • Blend the cream cheese and buffalo sauce before adding the remaining ingredients.
  • Chop the shredded chicken into smaller pieces to make filling each wonton wrapper with small amounts easier to do. Large chunks of chicken can be challenging to work with.
  • Finely chop the green onions before adding to the mixture.
  • Don’t overfill wontons, or they will be difficult to seal and the cream cheese will ooze out during frying.
  • When folding the buffalo chicken wontons, don’t over moisten the edges, or the wontons can become soggy.
  • Add a light coating of oil to your prep area to prevent the wontons from sticking to your work surface.
  • Cover the filled and folded wontons with a damp paper towel while you continue working. This will prevent them from drying out.
  • When you air fry wontons, leave space between them so they don’t stick together and become chewy.
  • Spray the wontons with oil on both sides to get a nice crispy coating.

Air Fryer Wontons Variations

  • Lighten It Up – You can lighten this up slightly by replacing the cream cheese with plain greek yogurt.
  • Add A Sauce – Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Wontons are perfect for dipping. Our favorite dips include soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, ranch dressing and blue cheese dressing. Thai sweet chili sauce, sweet and sour sauce and honey are also a flavorful options.
  • Fold Them Differently – Folding air fryer wontons in half into a triangle is super easy to do, but wontons can be folded in all kinds of ways. A quick search on the internet will give you lots of ideas.

  • Use Leftover Chicken – This recipe is perfect for using leftover chicken. Simply freeze chicken until you have enough to make a batch of air fryer buffalo chicken wontons.
  • Use Rotisserie Chicken – Rotisserie chicken is flavorful and inexpensive. It’s a great source for shredded chicken.
