Tips For Success

Some tips for making sweet potato chips air fryer really awesome.

  • Sweet potato chips turn from being ready to burnt very fast. Start checking them a few minutes before they are meant to be done so you catch them before they burn.
  • These continue to crisp up as they cool down.
  • Use a mandolin to get slices of the same thickness for more even cooking.
  • For many chips, you will need to cook in batches.
  • Don’t saturate with oil. A light spritz of oil is all you need.
  • Sprinkle the chips with salt while they are still hot.
  • Cooking time will depend on the thickness of your chips.
  • For the oven version, if you find that a few of your chips are uncooked, then pop just those undercooked ones back and bake for a few more minutes.

Variations

  • Season Well – Keep it simple by sprinkling with sea salt or add lots of flavor by sprinkling with garlic powder, paprika, or pepper. You can even experiment with seasoning blends like taco seasoning, Italian seasoning and more.
  • Make Them Spicy – Looking for a little spice? Season with a bit of cayenne pepper for a bit of heat.
  • Dip Them – Sweet potato chips are just as good for dipping as regular chips. Serve them with your favorite store-bought or homemade dip.

Budget-Friendly Tips

  • Buy in Bulk – Sweet potatoes can be stored for a long time so look for larger bags which are often sold at a lower per-pound price.
  • Grow Your Own –  Sweet potatoes are easy to grow, even in a large pot.

Storage

  • Prep Ahead – Slice the potatoes and let them air dry for at least 5 minutes before cooking.
  • Store – These sweet potato chips will be the tastiest on the day you make them. Leftovers can be stored in an air-tight container.

FAQs

Do I Need To Peel The Sweet Potatoes?

I like to peel my sweet potatoes, but you don’t have to. Sweet potato skins are perfectly safe to eat, both raw and cooked. If you prefer, leave the skins on but be sure to thoroughly wash the potatoes before slicing and cooking.

Should I Soak The Potatoes In Ice Water?

While not required, soaking potatoes in ice water before frying removes excess starch and helps you get super crispy fried potatoes.

If you wish to perform this optional step, slice the potatoes and soak them in a bowl of ice water for 20-30 minutes. Drain and dry well with a towel before proceeding with the recipe.
