Why Make This Recipe
- Easy to make – It’s so easy to prepare that the kids can make it unsupervised.
- Kid-Friendly – Kids love this dish, so it is perfect for any time.
- Budget-friendly – This is a great way to use up leftover fruit and it’s highly adaptable to make with any sort of fruit you like.
What’s Needed
It is not a big grocery list, but the fruit choices will be your biggest decision.
- Fruit – I’ve used kiwis, strawberries, blueberries, and mango. Pineapples, blackberries, seedless grapes, seedless mandarin oranges, pears, watermelon, Papaya. You can also add bananas, but if so then add at the last minute as they tend to brown and get mushy when stored in the fridge. I prefer to avoid bananas. Choose your favorite fruit or what is easily available at your local fruit and veg store.
- Maple syrup – Use your favorite brand of maple syrup. You can also use honey if not vegan.
- Lime juice – I like using lime juice, but lemon juice works well too!
- Poppy seeds – These add a little extra crunch. Feel free to omit them if you don’t like them or don’t have any.

Bintu’s Tips And Variations
Here are some tips to keep it fresh and some nice variations.
- This salad works best with ripe firm fruit.
- Use a sharp knife and cutting board. Don’t cut fruit too small, as smaller pieces will get too squishy.
- Add some lemon or lime zest, along with a little orange zest, to enhance the flavor of the dressing for fruit salad.
- Toss in some slivered almonds or shredded coconut for even more crunch and great texture.
- Choose fruits that are in season as they will be more affordable.
- Add in more of the cheaper fruit and use less of the more expensive fruit.
- Serve with granola and yogurt on the side for breakfast and dessert.
Storage
- Prep Ahead—This is one of those recipes that tastes nice after a couple of hours. Prep 2-3 hours beforehand, refrigerate, and mix occasionally for the fruit salad to develop.
- Store – Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. It is best if you remove as much air as possible so probably easiest with a ziplock bag.
- Freeze – I don’t recommend freezing this recipe.
FAQs
I don’t recommend using frozen fruit as thawed fruits end up mushy. Save your frozen fruit for smoothies and baked goods.
If you use fruit that go brown, like apples and bananas then squeeze some lime or lemon juice over them as soon as you have finished cutting them up.
