Air Fryer Orange Chicken

Ingredients

For The Chicken

  • 1 pound (454g) boneless skinless chicken breasts (or chicken thighs), cut into bite sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

For the Orange Sauce

  • ½ cup (118ml) orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoon gluten free soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoon water
  • 1 ½ tablespoons rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with water to make a slurry

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 400 F / 200C.
  • Mix chicken and cornstarch in a bowl until pieces are coated.
  • Add chicken into the air fryer basket and cook for 8-10 minutes until cooked through, making sure to shake halfway through cooking. Remove and set aside.
  • Prepare sauce by combining orange juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, water, vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger and the cornstarch slurry in a saucepan or wok. Let simmer over low medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  • Switch off the heat and add in the cooked chicken, mixing until coated. Remove, garnish as desired, and serve.

Tips For Success

  • Be sure to shake off any excess corn starch from the chicken or it may become gummy or burn during cooking. 
  • Turn or shake the chicken halfway through the cooking time. 
  • Check for doneness with a meat thermometer. 

Variations

  • Top It - Garnish the finished chicken with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. 
  • Make it Spicy - Add red chili flakes or chili garlic oil to the sauce to make it spicy. 

Budget-Friendly Tips 

  • Use Thigh Meat - Thigh meat is generally less expensive and is incredibly flavorful in this recipe. 
  • Buy Chicken on Sale -  Watch for sales on chicken or purchase in bulk when chicken is less expensive. Freeze for later use. 
  • Serve with Rice or Noodles -  Serve with rice or noodles to make this chicken a full meal.
  • Serve with Veggies - Add stir-fried veggies to stretch this meal further.
