The Simple Ingredients and Substitutions
Friend, you don’t need anything fancy here, just a few basics you probably already own:
- Uncooked pizza dough. I tend to use refrigerated store-bought pizza dough for speed and ease. But do feel free to make your own if you are up for that, just factor in the extra time.
- Pizza sauce. For simplicity I use some jarred marinara, pizza sauce, marinara, or even tomato passata mixed with some Italian seasoning or oregano.
- Mozzarella cheese. If possible, grating the cheese yourself from a block cheese is always better! Pre-grated cheese contains preservatives that prevent clumping, but that also keeps it from melting as smoothly. I sometimes add in a little extra sharp cheddar or Parmesan for a cheesy boost.
- Pepperoni. Whilst I like the classic pepperoni, I also use turkey pepperoni, cooked sausage, ham, bacon or shredded chicken. I have added quick cook veggies like bell peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, or onions.
- Seasoning. Italian seasoning or oregano are my go-to’s for extra flavor.
- Olive oil. I brush this on to help crisp up the crust edges.
