This Halloween Puppy Chow combines colorful Halloween candy with crunchy Chex cereal, chocolate chips, and peanut butter into a festive and flavorful treat the whole family will love!

Suitable for gluten-free diets.

A bowl of halloween puppy chow with halloween candy and candy corn

You only need a few minutes and 5 ingredients to whip up this spooky treat that can be served up for Halloween parties, trick or treating, ghoulish occasions, and more.

Just like the classic Puppy Chow snack mix, I looooove that this highly addictive Halloween Muddy Buddies recipe is easily adaptable so you can add in whichever extra ghoulish candy you want to. Just make sure you double the recipe so that you can have a little extra for gifting (or for snacking for yourself).

Why Make This Recipe

  • Contains only 5 ingredients and less than 10 minutes of prep.
  • It is budget friendly, easy, and tasty and made from pantry ingredients.
  • Easy to customize – just add your favorite mix-ins.
the ingredients needed for making Halloween puppy chow

Ingredient Notes

  • Chex cereal – I prefer to use rice Chex cereal as the crunchy base of this recipe. But you can swap in corn Chex cereal instead.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips – when combined with the powdered sugar, semi-sweet chocolate keeps this recipe from being overly sweet.
  • Halloween candy – This recipes gets color and festive flair from classic Halloween candy, candy corn, and edible eyeball candies. Of course feel freel to use other candy to suit your taste.
  • Peanut butter – use creamy smooth peanut butter as it melts evenly to easily coat the cereal.
  • Powdered sugar – Puppy chow gets color and sweetness from powdered sugar. #allthatyum

How To Make Halloween Puppy Chow

Get the complete ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.

  1. Pour Chex cereal into a large bowl. You want to have enough space to mix in the chocolate.
  2. In a separate microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips using 30-second increments, stirring the chocolate each time. Then mix in the peanut butter. If you find the mixture is too thick, melt in the microwave for an additional 10 seconds.
  3. Pour the mixture over the cereal and gently stir so that the cereal is just coated.
  4. Transfer into a large ziplock bag, then add powdered sugar and zip the bag closed. Be sure it’s tightly sealed shut.
  5. Then shake the bag until the all of the cereal is coated with powdered sugar.
  6. Transfer into a serving bowl, add the candy, and gently mix together.

Recipe Tips

  • There are about 9 cups of cereal, so be sure you use a large enough bowl to accommodate everything.
  • Add more powdered sugar if you want it sweeter.
  • Make sure you get a big ziplock bag so that the mixture all fits.
  • Some of the mix-ins may fall to the bottom, so save a little to sprinkle on top just before serving.

Variations

This fall puppy chow is sweet and colorful as is, but you can also vary the color to suit your theme. Some other mix-ins you can add include:

  • Cut-up halloween Oreos cookies.
  • Green and purple candy.
  • Reeses Pieces.
  • Mini Pretzels.
  • Black and white candy.
  • Candy pumpkins.

Budget Friendly Tips

  • Buy Candy After the Holiday – Candy is often marked down in a day or two following a holiday. Hit the store early and stock up on your favorites at a fraction of the price.
  • Watch for Sales –  Many stores offer sales on cereal and chocolate regularly. Look out for coupons or discounts on shopping apps.
  • Buy Generic – Store-brand and other generic ingredients are an inexpensive alternative.

Storage

  • Store – stored in an air-tight container for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze –  Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. It might be easier to freeze in snacking portions so you just defrost what you need.
