How To Make Grilled Chicken Wings

Get full ingredients list and instructions from the recipe card below.

  1. Clean and lightly oil the grill grates, and preheat the grill to medium heat. Alternatively, preheat a grill pan on the stovetop.
  2. Pat chicken wings dry with a paper towel.
  3. In a large bowl, combine onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, Italian seasoning, ground coriander, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken wings and toss until well-coated.
  4. Place the chicken wings on the grill and cook for about 20 minutes, turning them over every 5 minutes or so. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer and serve immediately.

Note: Always check for doneness with a meat thermometer. The internal temperature should be 165 degrees F / 74 degrees C when inserted into the thickest part of the chicken wing.

Tips For Success

  • Clean grill grates well before oiling to prevent the chicken from sticking.
  • Preheat the grill so it’s nice and hot before you grill chicken wings.
  • Pat the chicken dry before coating it with the dry rub seasoning blend.
  • Combine the wings and seasoning in a small bowl and toss to distribute the seasoning evenly.
  • Grill the wings over direct heat.
  • Keep a spray bottle of water handy in case you have flare-ups in the grill.
  • Flip the chicken wings every 5 minutes or so to prevent burning.
  • For even cooking, keep the grill covered except when turning the grilled chicken wings.
  • Use this same chicken wing recipe for grilling chicken thighs.
  • Always check for doneness with an instant read thermometer. The internal temperature should be 165 degrees F / 74 degrees C when inserted into the thickest part of the chicken.
  • Place chicken wings on a platter and serve the cooked wings hot.

Variations

  • Swap the Seasoning – This seasoning blend brings so much flavor, but you can use what you have on hand or add a store-bought seasoning blend.
  • Make Them Spicy – Add a pinch of cayenne or crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning to make these wings spicy.
  • Add A Sauce – The seasoning on the wings gives them incredible flavor, and they are perfect on their own, but you can certainly brush the wings with your favorite sauce while cooking or serve with various dipping sauces.

Budget-Friendly Tips

  • Buy Frozen Wings – Frozen chicken wings are often cheaper by the pound than fresh wings. Be sure to thaw them thoroughly before cooking.

Prep Ahead And Storage

  • Prep Ahead – Thaw frozen wings before cooking.
  • Store – Leftover wings can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days but will not be as crispy when reheated. Reheating on the grill or in the oven will yield the best results.
  • Freeze – We do not recommend freezing this grilled chicken wings recipe, especially if the chicken has been previously frozen.

FAQs

Can I Use Frozen Wings?

We love frozen wings because they are often more affordable than fresh wings. Just be sure to thaw them completely before serving. I like to pop them into a bowl in the fridge and let them thaw overnight.

Can I Grill Wings Without A Grill?

An outdoor grill is ideal for parties, and cleanup is a breeze, but you can also cook quickly in a grill pan on the stovetop.

When To Add Sauce While Grilling?

In addition to the dry rub, you may want to add a sauce to the wings. You can add sauce before or during grilling, but it can be susceptible to burning. I prefer to grill my wings and brush or toss them with a sauce before serving.

What Dipping Sauce Goes With Wings?

These wings pair well with almost any dipping sauce. Some of my favorites include ranch dressing, blue cheese dressing, honey mustard, your favorite BBQ sauce, buffalo sauce, hot sauce, and more!
