- Preheat Air Fryer to 380 degrees F or 190 degrees C.
- Mix garlic salt, onion powder, and oil in a small bowl or glass measuring cup.
- Shred the cabbage and place it into a separate bowl. Add half of the seasoned oil and mix until well-coated.
- Cube the chicken and add it to another bowl. Add the remaining seasoned oil and mix until coated.
- Add the chicken into the air fryer basket and cook for 5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through cooking.
- Push the chicken to one side and add in the shredded cabbage, making sure to keep the cabbage and chicken separated.
- Cook the cabbage for 6-9 minutes, depending on how charred you prefer it to get. Stir the cabbage a couple of times while it cooks
- Keep an eye on the chicken, checking it with a thermometer to avoid overcooking. If needed, remove from the air fryer and place onto a plate while the cabbage finishes cooking.
Note: Always check for doneness with a meat thermometer. The internal temperature of chicken should be at least 165 degrees F or 74 degrees C before serving.
Tips For Success
- Cube the chicken into even bite-sized pieces. This helps with even cooking.
- Divide the seasoning and oil into two bowls to season the chicken and the cabbage separately.
- Add Italian seasoning and smoked paprika to further season the dish.
- If desired, you can cut cabbage into wedges instead of shredding.
- Keep the chicken and the cabbage separate in the air fryer.
- Check the temperature of the chicken with a meat thermometer. When the internal chicken has reached 165 degrees F or 74 degrees C, remove it to a plate. Continue to cook the cabbage as needed.
- Cook the cabbage for 6 – 8 minutes until it has reached the desired tenderness and has the desired amount of char.
Variations
- Cube the Cabbage – I like shredded cabbage, but you can cube the cabbage or slice into wedges instead.
- Use Leftover Chicken – Cook the cabbage as directed. When just about done, add seasoned leftover shredded chicken to the air fryer until heated through.
- Add Onions – Add thinly sliced onions to the cabbage for lots of earthy flavor.
Budget-Friendly Tips
- Buy Chicken in Bulk – Purchase chicken in bulk when on sale and freeze for later use.
- Buy Fresh Cabbage – Bagged, shredded cabbage is convenient but can be more expensive than fresh cabbage.
Prep Ahead And Storage
- Prep Ahead – Slice the cabbage up to 3 days in advance. Chicken can be cubed before freezing.
- Store – Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
- Freeze – Leftovers can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave or air fryer. The cabbage will be much more tender and no longer crispy on the edges.
