Want a really easy water based fruit drink, made with all natural ingredients that can be served with pretty much everything? Then look no further than this colourful and easy Melon Agua Fresca Recipe.

This drink is really popular all over Mexico and Central America. Luckily, homemade Aguas Frescas are soooooooo easy to make that even the kids can make them unsupervised. You just need 5 minutes of prep, and 4 everyday ingredients and one blender.

What Is Agua Fresca

So Aguas Frescas, translated as fresh water or cool water, are light and refreshing Mexican drinks made from fresh fruits and water. Some versions may include things like seeds and nuts as well.

These Mexican street drinks are great for Cinco de Mayo, as an easy summer drink, for cookouts and bbq and drinks parties and anytime you want to an easy to scale up make ahead drink to serve a crowd.

I love serving it alongside family favorite Chicken Fajita Pasta. and Mexican Paletas Ice Pops.

Ingredient Notes

  • Fresh fruits – in this case sweet melon (cantaloupe) but see below for more options when they are in season.
  • Water – Can be room temperature but if chilled then you can drink it straight away.
  • Lime juice – Cuts thought all the sweetness and adds flavor. I have used lemon juice with great success as well.
  • Sweetener –  you can use maple syrup, sugar or which ever sweetener you normally use.

How To Make Agua Frescas

  1. Add the melon, lime juice, maple syrup or sugar and water into the blender and whiz until smooth.
  2. Taste for sweetness and adjust if necessary.
  3. Pour into a pitcher or glasses filled with ice.

Tips For Success And Variations

  • If your fruits are really sweet, then you can omit the sweetener.  
  • Feel free to combine different fruits to change up the flavor profile
  • Use sparkling water instead of fresh if you prefer.

Budget Friendly Tips

  • Freeze leftover fruits and use frozen fruits to make this when needed.
  • Use which ever fruits you have to hand – see suggestions below.

Storage

  • Refrigerate – these are best serves straight away but if you want to store, then store (without) the ice in a refrigerator for up to 3 days. Juts make sure you mix them well before serving.

Best Fruit To Use For Agua Frescas

The great things about Agua Frescas is that they are highly adaptable and can be made with various fruits such as

  • Pineapple
  • Strawberries
  • Mango
  • Papaya
  • Cucumber
  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
  • Honeydew melon

Whilst you can also make these with seedier fruits, you would need to strain it before serving.
